FAQs

Do I need planning permission for a pergola or gazebo?
Usually not: open-sided structures under 2.5m within 2m of a boundary (or 3–4m elsewhere) generally fall under permitted development in England. Solid-roofed gazebos close to boundaries and anything in conservation areas deserve a check with your council.
Timber or aluminium pergola?
Pressure-treated timber is cheaper, traditional and paintable, but needs the same care as any garden timber. Aluminium costs more upfront, never rots, and is what most louvred-roof designs are built from — check the stated wind rating either way.
What's the difference between a pergola, a gazebo and an arbour?
A pergola has an open slatted roof for training plants or fitting a louvred cover; a gazebo has a solid roof for genuine shelter; an arbour is a small seated nook, usually with a bench built in. Retailers blur the terms — the roof tells you what it really is.
