Best modular play sofas, compared

A modular play sofa is really two purchases in one: a kids' sofa and an endlessly rebuildable fort kit. The differences that matter are the ones the product photos don't show — foam density (saggy vs springy), cover fabric and washability, how many build configurations the pieces actually allow, and what a replacement cover costs when the original meets a felt-tip pen. We compare every modular play sofa across the UK retailers we track, ranked by value and spec — never by commission.

FAQs

What age are play sofas best for?
Most suit roughly 1–8 years: toddlers use them as soft climbing terrain, older kids as den-building kit. Past about eight, the play value fades but they still work as casual seating or a spare guest mattress.
What should I look for in the foam?
Higher-density foam holds its shape under climbing and folds; cheap low-density foam sags within months. If a listing doesn't state density, the product weight is a useful proxy — heavier usually means denser.
Are the covers washable?
Almost all have zip-off machine-washable covers, but fabrics differ: cotton blends feel nicer and stain faster, polyester and cord hide wear better. Check whether spare covers are sold separately — that doubles the practical lifespan.
